Destination Choice#

The destination choice model in POLARIS is a multi-nomial logit model with zones as alternatives. It accounts for competition and agglomeration effects and is planning-constrained for non-routine activities. For runtime purposes, it employs stratified sampling based on travel time and employment, with 4 strata and 200 alternatives each. The choice of individual location in a zone is done randomly.

The destination choice model for non-routine activities (i.e. all activities beside work and school) is a planning-constrained model. For example, for people that go to work on the simulated day and who make a stop to shop on the way home from work, the distance is based on the detour from the work-home trip and the choice set is constrained to reachable locations in space-time. If there are more than one stop, then the order in which activities are planned determines the space-time prism of reachable locations.
